After three installments, there’s absolutely no reason anyone should be getting misty-eyed over a new Toy Story trailer, and yet with the release of Toy Story 4’s first full-length trailer, eyes are leaking en masse.
In the trailer, the Toy Story gang has left the safe confines of their new home with Bonnie to venture somewhere they’ve never gone before. On a family trip, their new mission is to protect new homemade toy, Forky (the voice of Tony Hale), but when he flips out and goes missing, Woody jumps
ship, er... RV, to dive out and stop him. That’s when he reconnects with newly minted feminist icon Bo Peep (in pants!) after she was deemed missing in Toy Story 2. She exposes Woody to a whole new carnival world and brings up that age-old Toy Story question: what does a toy do when it comes face to face with its inevitable shelf life?
Bo Peep (Annie Potts) and Woody (Tom Hanks) explore the far stretches of a carnival in Woody’s pursuit to get him and Forky (Tony Hale) back to his new owner.
That seems to be where the biggest part of the story takes off. And even though the payoff seems similar (big ol' dose of good will and compassion, anyone?), leave it to director Josh Cooley and actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to make a franchise feel fresh nine years after its last installment. The original, which came out 24 years ago, has somehow retained a good portion of its original cast. The fourth iteration will add the voices of Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, and Jordan Peele. Here's the trailer:
Wow. Seems like if you add a Beach Boys song to anything, you can bring a tear to the toughest person's eye. God only knows where we’d be without you, Woody. Toy Story 4 is due out in theaters this June.
