It’s rare that you get to test drive a car on a racing track, and it was for this exact purpose that I found myself in the back of a white Volkswagen SUV. At the time, I didn’t pay attention to the particular model, but a short ride later—a very comfortable one at that—I found out it was the Volkswagen Touareg R-Line, which would also be loaned to us for an extended review. 

Maybe it was the relief of escaping the heat, maybe it was the comfort of the seats after standing all day, but that brief moment was enough to make an impression. Before the day was over, a loan handover date had already been arranged.

The Touareg R-Line sits in an interesting space. It has the presence of a proper E-segment SUV, but it does not huff and puff the way some performance SUVs do. Powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine producing 340 PS, it carries plenty of power without the loud V6 often synonymous with it. Instead, it delivers its power with a smooth and effortless surge that glides along, offering respectable fuel economy, until you need that extra push for an overtake.

Numbers aside, the driving experience is where the Touareg R-Line makes its case. The cabin feels like a bubble of calm separated from the chaos outside, especially when navigating Kuala Lumpur’s often snarling traffic. My favourite feature throughout the weeklong ride was easily the automatic self-levelling air suspension. Like a cloud, the car floats over road imperfections, potholes being one of them. I approached our local road conditions with slightly more confidence, taking bumps without the usual hesitation. The suspension simply absorbed it all, a foreign feeling I could get used to.

The adaptive cruise control deserves its own mention. It is intuitive to activate, it maintains a comfortable distance from the car ahead, and it makes slow-moving highways significantly less tiring. Paired with the air suspension, heavy traffic and long drives make the usual Malaysian driving experience suddenly feel therapeutic.

Taking it through the slightly twisty roads of Bukit Damansara is equally effortless. The eight-speed automatic transmission and intelligent 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system keep the car in the right gears through the climb, allowing the car to carry its size confidently without feeling cumbersome.

The technology package is another highlight. The Touareg R-Line comes equipped with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE advanced safety systems, including features such as night vision and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technology. The overwhelming number of sensors around the car is reassuring, especially when said car doesn’t belong to me.

The only downside is that the calibration feels overly cautious. The warning beeps arrive too loud, too abruptly, sometimes when there is still plenty of room around the vehicle, creating moments of unnecessary paranoia. I found myself turning off whichever safety alerts I could. No reason to spook the jockey.

Thankfully, despite its size, the car remains manageable. The turning circle and overall agility make tight parking situations far less intimidating, so even the most novice of drivers should have little reason to panic.

After spending time with the car, the two things that stood out most were comfort and space. I never got to properly test its full capacity with cargo or passengers, but even from a glance, the interior felt generous enough to make an impression.

As a man in my twenties with no children, I recognise this probably is not a car tailored to my current stage of life. The rear seats felt too vacant, and all that real estate made me wonder if it was time to start family planning.

That said, perhaps those who will find the Touareg R-Line most appealing are people who have outgrown ostentation. After all, an E-segment SUV has its main markets. This one, in particular, feels tailored for those who have quietly reached a certain stage in life, those who have important things to do, and need a reliable counterpart. And to further sweeten the pot, the prices are significantly reduced for the locally assembled models. 

After all is said and done, the Touareg R-Line is for the subtle achiever. It is for the person with a dream and a destination, someone who is grounded yet doesn’t mind having their head in the clouds.
