From high-speed races to Hollywood reunions, there’s plenty to add to your watchlist this month. A Malaysian rallying legend gets the big-screen treatment in Terbang, Max Verstappen takes on 100 competitors in Max vs 100, and Jay-Z revisits three decades of music with Rick Rubin. And because September wouldn't be complete without something terrifying, American Horror Story returns for its 13th season with some very familiar faces. This month brings plenty of speed, star power, and supernatural chaos to the screen.
Created by Guy Ritchie, British aristocracy and gangsters return for a highly anticipated second season. Theo James is back as Eddie Horniman, who unexpectedly inherits the dukedom, family estate and massive cannabis operation hidden beneath it. Kaya Scodelario plays Susie Glass, who runs the illegal operation for her jailed father, Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone). New guest stars include Tyler Conti as Joe Green, Susie’s love interest. We spoke with the British actor about joining the series.
One year after the events of season one, Eddie and Susie look beyond England, working to establish a foothold in the lakeside villas of Northern Italy. The Duke has stopped trying to escape the criminal underworld he’s found himself in, and is instead fully embracing it, exerting his influence to further his reach. But that newfound confidence comes with plenty of dire consequences. Susie grows increasingly wary of Eddie’s appetite for power. Meanwhile, Bobby's questionable decisions give her another reason to question the entire operation.
Having collaborated on Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have teamed up once again to write and direct this buddy action-comedy film. Set against a Cold War backdrop, Ryan Reynolds stars as a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot, Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly. Kenneth Branagh plays his unlikely ally Nikolai Ustinov, a disenchanted former KGB agent with a fondness for American culture.
Trouble begins when Troy’s covert mission goes awry, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines with Soviet forces closing in. He’s soon discovered by Nikolai, who offers him a way out, with a few stipulations, naturally. Their escape takes them across hostile territory, where staying alive means working together, and neither man is entirely sure he can trust the other. Along the way, Top Gun references abound as the pair put aside their differences, eventually turning the uneasy partnership into a friendship.
Na Hong-jin, the director behind The Chaser and The Yellow Seas, returns with a Korean sci-fi thriller. It marks the director’s first feature in 10 years after 2016’s The Wailing. The film brings together Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon, alongside Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Cameron Britton, and Taylor Russell, rounding out the international ensemble. For Jung Ho-yeon, best known for Netflix’s Squid Game, HOPE also marks her feature film debut.
Set in the fictional border village of Hope Harbor, near the Korean Demilitarised Zone, strange attacks on livestock hint at mysterious creatures nearby. Wildfires cut off communication and services across the countryside, leaving police chief Ko Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and his eager deputy Lim Sung-ae (Jung Ho-yeon) to defend the village. As headstrong villager Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) forms a hunting party, things quickly devolve into a fight for survival. Before long, the group realises they’re the ones being hunted.
Apple TV+’s darkly comedic take on a spy thriller returns with another dangerous case. Season six draws from Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh books in Mick Herron’s mystery series. Gary Oldman is back as Jackson Lamb, the foul-mouthed, thoroughly unimpressed boss of MI5’s dumping ground for disgraced agents. Jack Lowden plays River Cartwright, a young agent whose career takes a sharp turn after a high-profile blunder, while Kirstin Scott Thomas plays Diana Teverner, steely top brass of MI5.
A string of attacks sends London into lockdown, with Slough House directly in the firing line. The team is slowly being picked off, one by one. Lamb and his agents have to work out who’s hunting them, and why, before another name gets crossed off the list. Meanwhile, River grieves his grandfather's recent death and bumps into his father, Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), at the funeral. New episodes arrive every Wednesday, bringing the familiar mix of dodging bullets, bureaucratic infighting and Lamb finding inventive ways to insult everyone.
Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian, directs this latest take on Capcom’s long-running survival-horror franchise. Rather than adapting one of the games, Cregger and co-writer Shay Hatten tell a fresh story set inside the Resident Evil universe. Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier, reuniting the actor with Cregger after Weapons. Meanwhile, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser round out the supporting cast.
What should’ve been a routine delivery for Bryan takes him into the middle of a terrifying outbreak around Raccoon City. Bryan has to figure out how to stay alive without any of the usual action-hero credentials. Along the way, weapons get upgraded as the creatures around him grow even harder to kill, not unlike the namesake game. The result is a survival-horror that mixes danger with Cregger’s humour, putting an extremely ordinary guy in an extraordinarily bad night.
Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen traded his Red Bull Racing car for a go-kart in a live motorsport event, placing one of the world’s fastest drivers against 100 competitors. Created by Red Bull and streaming on Disney+, the event took over a purpose-built circuit at Silverstone. With live race data and game-inspired graphics, the event let Verstappen use his childhood karting tricks to stay ahead of the competition, much to his rivals' dismay.
Verstappen started from the back, with every driver he overtook eliminated from the race. The catch? These were not 100 professional racing drivers. The race brought together athletes, creators, streamers, Red Bull talent, and personalities from around the world, all with one job. Stay ahead of Verstappen. The racers were mic'd up throughout, so viewers heard hilarious live reactions from behind the wheel. With the iconic F1 driver hunting them down, staying ahead was easier said than done.
Malaysia’s rallying legend gets the big-screen treatment in Terbang, the latest film from The Journey and Ola Bola director Chiu Keng Guan. Inspired by the true story of Karamjit Singh, better known as the “Flying Sikh”, the sports drama stars Irfan Zaini as Ajeet, alongside Jack Tan, Zizan Razak, Nam Ron and Diana Danielle. The movie is also available in 4DX, bringing a little more movement to a story built around speed. Terbang was also featured in our recent roundup of racing films, alongside iconic racing movies including F1, Ford v Ferrari and Rush.
Ajeet leaves rallying after a tragedy on the track and settles into a quieter life with his wife, Lisa. Five years later, he gets back behind the wheel and is paired with Kitt, a young and hot-headed driver whose approach to racing is very different from his own. As the pair navigate clashing personalities, team politics, and Ajeet’s unresolved guilt, they fight for wins in the underdog PERT team. What starts as a comeback becomes a shot at the international stage, with Ajeet having to reckon with both the competition ahead and the past he thought he had left behind.
Thirty years after the release of Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z sits down with Rick Rubin for an HBO documentary series. In his directorial debut, Rubin uses the format as an extended conversation between the two longtime music figures. Across eight episodes, they listen back to songs from different points in Jay-Z’s career, breaking down the lyrics and memories attached to them. Meanwhile, the rapper reflects on his creative process and the ideas, stories and experiences behind some of his biggest hits.
The music provides the starting point for a more personal look at Jay-Z’s life, with tracks including “Can’t Knock the Hustle”, “Brooklyn’s Finest”, “99 Problems” and “The Story of O.J.” opening the door. The rapper also looks back on his upbringing, early success and changing relationship with fame, while explaining how moments from his own life made their way into his music. The result offers a closer look at the man behind the catalogue, told largely through the songs themselves.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson put their real-life friendship to work in an eight-episode comedy series. It reimagines the two actors discovering they might actually be related. Created by Emmy nominee Lee Eisenberg, the series stars McConaughey and Harrelson as fictionalised versions of themselves, alongside Holland Taylor, Natalie Martinez and Brittany Ishibashi.

Between family secrets, fame and an increasingly complicated friendship, this show asks a fairly simple question. What happens when your best friend suddenly becomes your brother?
Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series finally returns for a 13th season. It brings together familiar faces from across the show’s history. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett and Emma Roberts are among those returning, while Jessica Lange reprises her role as Constance Langdon for the first time in eight years.
Season 13 brings characters from previous seasons back into the fold, including Cordelia Goode, Madison Montgomery, Marie Laveau, Rubber Man, Twisty the Clown and Kai Anderson. Details of the new story remain closely guarded, but the returning characters point towards a season that reaches back into the show's past. After haunted houses, witches, hotels, cults and just about every other kind of nightmare, the series brings some familiar horrors back for another round.
