”And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

The above is a quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, describing perfectly what the world of watches can seem like to a watch fan. Because sometimes we find ourselves drawn to a particular model for no exact reason other than it making our heart sing, reasons that are invisible to the eye.

IWC’s releases for Watches and Wonders 2026, specifically those relating to the Le Petit Prince limited editions, does exactly this. It began as a collaboration 20 years ago, and ever since, these blue-dialled watches have captured the hearts of watch fans as much as the original novel has inspired countless readers around the world.

Let’s take a gander at the new Le Petit Prince offerings, then, shall we? And yes, we know that IWC has also released an interesting timepiece in the form of the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive, but that’s a story for another time.

Anyway, the novel-inspired collection can be summarised into five pieces: two Mark XX models, two stainless steel chronographs, and one Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36. If you want to split hairs and include the ProSet and ceramic options, there are actually nine new Le Petit Prince releases, but let’s not be too pedantic because there is one main star I’d like to highlight today, and that is the apple of my eye.

That apple of my eye would be the 36mm Pilot’s Watch. Why? No reason. But if I could tell you what exactly it was about the watch that tugged at my heartstrings, then it wouldn’t be as magical then, would it?

At face value, this is a lovely-sized watch, and is as simple as simple gets—a three-handed watch, designed in IWC’s trademark Pilot’s form, meaning it is legible and tastefully minimalist. You don’t get any thrills or frills here, especially when compared to other, more exciting 2026 releases from the watchmaker (Ceralume, anyone?).

And yet, you get a timepiece that almost whispers at me to dig for my credit card. Not like I need another three-handed watch. There’s no visible Le Petit Prince branding to mark it as a limited edition either, unless you turn the watch over and spot the embossing on the caseback. Maybe it’s the lovely shade of deep blue dial that catches the eye, or maybe it’s the X-factor you get from pairing a very wearable size with this level of simplicity, but the 36mm version just… works.

If you want a bit more utility, then the Mark XX versions, with an added date window and slightly bigger dimensions of 40mm, will fit the bill. Need more pizzazz? Then get the gold version. These models are technically very similar to their smaller sibling, but something in my heart tells me that they’re not my favourite Le Petit Prince models for the year.

The remaining models are the chronograph references, which, due to their added complication, are a bit on the chunkier side. That is a sacrifice you usually have to pay for the chronograph feature, but hey, you also round up the tool-factor by having a day-date display as well.

All in all, this year’s Le Petit Prince releases don’t add as much as they reduce, and in their restraint, they have made a perfectly desirable collectable. Because, like Saint-Exupéry also said, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
