Ferragamo’s Tramezza transforms discipline, style, and sports into a conversation about craftsmanship

Some people may think that shoes are nothing more than a piece of functional gear that offers protection. To others, it is an afterthought to style, pushed to the sidelines for not being in our immediate line of sight. However, for people like me who were ushered into the fashion scene by the hypebeast vortex, we treat the two extremities that anchor our being to the world as prime real estate.

The importance of footwear has long been reinforced by brands, often through the language of comfort and ambassadorship of prominent athletes. Marketed to us as treating our feet kindly by investing in cushioning, performance, and cutting-edge innovation. But Ferragamo flips the script.

For their ‘Legends, Reimagined’ campaign, Ferragamo goes back to the essence of their legacy, beginning with the Tramezza shoe. By tapping into two athletes who have long hung up their uniforms—Italian ski legend Alberto Tomba and Lin Dan, China’s most feared ‘Super Dan’ of badminton—they are shifting the conversation between sports and footwear into a space beyond performance metrics.

In style and sport, the differences often come down to the smallest of margins. A millimetre might mean the difference between victory and defeat, or between a precise taper from a weird silhouette. These are the details that separate the good from the exceptional.

And it is with exceptional craftsmanship that the Tramezza takes centre stage. Its namesake, the layer of patented steel shank placed between the insole and outsole, gives the shoe stability and comfort that naturally moulds to the foot like a glove. Each pair goes through over 160 handcrafted steps, from the leather selection to the assembly.

Lin Dan articulates this evolution best. “My sports career has bestowed upon me more than medals; it has forged a life philosophy of focus, discipline, and the courage to confront challenges,” he says. “Partnering with Ferragamo now is an extension of that very ethos into a broader arena. In our respective fields, we both pursue excellence, united by the belief that true victory is born from steadfast daily practice.”

What makes this pairing so compelling is that both athletes are retired masters whose legacies endure beyond the arena. While most athlete endorsements focus on their current performance, rankings, and measurable output, Ferragamo decided to play on a different court. They championed their footwear as one that mirrors the achievements of these athletes, forever etched in history.

Ferragamo translates precision and discipline that once drove Olympic-winning performances into craft, just like the footwork of Lin Dan or the rhythm of Tomba. The Tramezza, then, ceases to be just a pair of dress shoes. They bring out philosophies and values that carry them forward, namely the proof that discipline is transferable.

And it is through this campaign that I reframed how I view craftsmanship and the interplay between sports and style. I used to think of it mostly in terms of durability or the quality of the final product, but now I have a deeper appreciation for the unseen labour required. The principles I admired in sports like patience, repetition, and attention to detail have always existed in craftsmanship and style. Maybe that’s why I love both.

With two chapters written, ‘Legends, Reimagined’ is only beginning, leaving one to wonder: who will Ferragamo tap for their next instalment?
