We often declare resolutions carelessly at the start of every year. Once sacred, these rituals are now reflexes without commitment. Somewhere along the way, we have forgotten that growth is gradual and that change cannot be realised without intentionality. With the air filled with the energies of renewal and reinvention, this sets the perfect backdrop for Jonathan Anderson’s first Dior collection to arrive in Malaysian stores.
Under Jonathan Anderson’s vision, the new Dior man is a modernised aristocrat. Drawing inspiration from the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment and preppy Ivy League codes from the 50’s, Dior’s latest SS26 collection features frock coats, silk gilets, Oxford shirts and neckties modernised with jeans and sneakers.
However, the 18th century was more than just a style reference point. The Enlightenment Era marked a pivotal shift in history, transforming something born of status into something earned through credibility. Clothing that traditionally symbolised class and excess is now reclaimed by the truth seekers.
This philosophy is further articulated in Dior’s SS26 show notes: “Youthful spontaneity ultimately spawns an ode to the imagination: a way to reinvent oneself and the moment, looking at what is old to shape new guises, allowing empathy to define elegance.” By practising intentionality and thoughtful living in our daily lives, style becomes the agency we have daily to take charge of our lives, to strive towards the better versions of ourselves we vowed to be at the start of the year.
For all its seriousness and deep contemplation, a sense of childlike wonder guides the enlightenment of the Dior man, reminding us to enjoy the process of change. The collection realises this through playful styling, with ties worn over collars and jeans falling over untied sneakers. Intention here is not rigid. It is carefree and playful, and it is in these moments of contrast that the collection truly shines. Naturally, it’s the pieces that embody these styling cues that we find ourselves resonating with the most.
