Justin Bieber's Set Was Divisive But His Loewe Boots Saved The Day

Those Loewe stompers need to be on my feet

This weekend Justin Bieber headlined Coachella for the first time. He was paid, apparently, a cool $10 million dollars for the set, surpassing Beyoncé to become the highest paid performer in the festival’s history. Yep, Beyoncé.

So you’d kind of expect him to put on a $10 million dollar performance, right? But Biebs, who last year broke his own Spotify streaming record with the release of Swag and the follow-up Swag II, had other ideas. He opened the set with a slew of songs from that album, before flipping open his Apple Macbook on which he had YouTube loaded up.

He then, much to the surprise of everyone (including Katy Perry), played a string of his most-famous hits, from "Baby" to "Never Say Never", and sort of sang along to them. It was like karaoke, but on a budget? In short, when compared to the Super Bowl halftime show-vibing headline set of Beyoncé, which led to the festival being unofficially branded “Beychella”, it was kind of difficult to see what the big payout actually went on. His set was sparse, and the flashing lights brought most of the energy. “I’m crying this might actually be the worst performance I’ve ever seen. He’s literally just playing music videos from youtube…” one X user said. Another said: “100,000 people paid to watch a man browse his own channel.”

Well, while the performance itself was divisive, one thing’s certain: Bieber’s clothes were worth the cheque. As a guy that’s always been tapped into how he looks - he even has his own apparel brand, Skylrk - Bieber was always going to deliver with his outfit. And that he did.

Following on from his shirtless Grammys performance, Biebs wore an oversized hoodie from his aforementioned brand Skylrk, and a pair of three-quarter length waxy black denim shorts by Lu’u Dan, the brand founded by Hung La, a longtime associate of Balenciaga and Celine. But it was his boots that really stole the show.

Biebs chose to wear a pair of £1,100 Loewe’s new Bobby lug-soled boots, which come with cut-outs on the grosgrain leather calves and a debossed anagram logo at the heel. They are the grailed boot of the season, and Bieber’s already got his feet in them, naturally. They’re kind of bonkers - why do they have or need a handle? - and fit Bieber’s mad vibe.

This guy sings about Swag (when he’s not jamming out to his own tracks on YouTube). You can always count on him to bring just that.
